We tried to ignore the preseason. We tried to brush off our inept offense. Maybe the Redskins lost interest in the preseason, we said. What we got however was more of the same in the NFL opener against the Giants. The Redskins first play from scrimmage resulted in a sack. That pretty much set the tone on offense for the rest of the game.
Honestly, what did you all expect? After getting run over by the Panthers and embarrassed by the Jags did you really think we were just going to roll into the Meadowlands and steal one from the defending Super Bowl Champs? As fans we would like for Zorn to come in, smoothly implement the West Coast Offense, and be competitive in the NFC East. But the truth of the matter is this is a work in progress. The problem here, and the reason why so many Redskin fans are in need of a stiff drink this Monday, is that The Redskins have been a work in progress for the last decade. We should be reaping the benefits of past draft picks and roster moves yet we find ourselves no better off than when Spurrier was at the helm. Okay, maybe a little better off.

Head Coach Jim Zorn made a risky decision this week. Rather than start the backups in the final and usually meaningless preseason game, he decided to go with his first team offense (minus CP, Randel El, and Jansen). The idea was to conserve as much momentum for the offense as possible after they got pimp smacked by the Carolina Panthers last weekend. In theory the plan seemed reasonable. In theory…

What a mess. The game was encompassed by negative energy from the start as both Channel 9 and Comcast Sports Net had technical difficulties with their production of The Redskins broadcast. To mask these difficulties they decided to inundate Redskin fans with 15 minutes of straight commercials. After a while, I too started to feel for the endangered Orangutans. Watching 15 minutes of straight commercials is irritating enough. But watching The Washington Redskins get completely dismantled by the Carolina Panthers 47-3 in their fourth, and most important, pre-season game is down right excruciating. When coaches take the time to set up a game plan for an opponent, you don’t expect to lose by 44 points. When you play your best players an entire half, you don’t expect to lose by 44 points. So why the hell did we lose by 44 points?!

Coach Jim Zorn is quite the enigma. He has essentially been no more than a quarterback coach in professional football the last 10 years and yet here he is, head coach of the most important sports franchise in Washington, D.C. Not only that but he is replacing a legend in Joe Gibbs. So is the Z man up to the challenge of leading this Redskins team to the promised land? It would seem like an incredibly daunting task. First off I really like Jim Zorn. He may turn out to be a complete disaster of a head coach but there is just something incredibly refreshing about him. [click to continue...]
