Puff Out Your Chest D.C.

Dr. Gonzo Reporting,

Well, I was right.  I predicted that the Redskins would win 4 games this year.  Now maybe I was a tad pessimistic after week 1, and in all fairness, I had the right to be.  Regardless, I was right, but humbled to say the least.

So the Skins have to play Dallas then Philly, back to back on the Road?  0-2, possibly 1-1 if they get lucky.  Not so fast pessimistic Skins follower, they just went 2-0 in those games.  No way, I wouldn’t believe it, but I saw it with my own two eyes.

The Skins went into “Big D” last week and defeated their arch rivals, and then this past Sunday they went in to the hostile “Linc” and ran the ball down the throat of one of the NFL’s top rush defenses.

All we heard was how good Jim Johnson is at scheming, and blitzing, and all of that was true in the first quarter, but after that it was all Skins.

Zorn got Portis going after a lack luster start to the passing game.  Portis was more than capable of shouldering the load rushing the ball 29 times for 145 yds and a touchdown.

Antawn Randel El looked like poop as a receiver, but reminded us all of his big play ability by throwing a touchdown to TE Chris Cooley.  Randel El improves to 19-23 and 4 touchdowns for his career.  Santana Moss who shone in Dallas last week, had zero catches but threw some nice blocks.  With Tana shut down, Cooley became the new number one receiver, catching 8 balls for 109 yards and a touchdown.  Even rookie Devin Thomas caught 2 first down balls.

I admit it looked grim when the Eagles jumped out to a 14-0 lead.  They looked poised to run the Skins back to D.C. with a boot print on their tails.  Then as if we had taken a trip into the center of the twilight zone, the Skins scored 16 straight points and never looked back finishing strong with a 23-17 victory.

The Skins played old school yesterday.  Their defense made a stop at the goal line and continued to dominate in the fourth quarter.  Even more impressive is the fact that Jason Taylor, Shawn Springs and Marcus Washington didn’t play.  Big ups to Carlos Rogers, Rocky Macintosh and Chris Horton.

The offense went throw back as well, dominating the line of scrimmage and converting on a huge 4th and 2 with 2:38 left in the game.  The O-line was dominant and Portis reeped the benefits.

So the Skins are 4-1 and damn it feels good, but it’s still so early in the season.  I don’t want to see this team fade out.  Early signs point to a team that can play through injuries, stay calm under pressure and not turn the ball over.  It is these attributes than will make this team into a playoff and maybe even a Super Bowl contender.

It feels good now and it should.  However I can’t help but feel like this could blow up in our face at anytime.  One things for sure, If we continue to protect the football there is no telling what this team can accomplish.
