U.S Hoops

Slightly Redeemed

by Dr. Gonzo on August 22, 2008

Dr. Gonzo Reporting,

The USA finally exercised it’s Olympic demons with a hard fought 101-81 victory over Argentina in the semi-finals of Olympic play.  The Redeem team got one step close to redeeming themselves by playing as a unit, with seven different players scoring in double figures.

Team US jumped out to an early 30-11 lead, and just when it seemed like time for cruise control, the Argentinians reminded the world of 2004.

It’s was almost deja-vu for team USA at the end of the second quarter, a quarter in which the US fell back into bad habits.  Argentina played a solid zone that began to baffle the US attack, instead of working through the zone with solid passes, the US settled for contested three pointers and unimaginative drives.

USA’s Final Tune Up

by Dr. Gonzo on August 5, 2008

Dr. Gonzo Reporting,
Here’s the deal, I was up at 8 o’clock this morning with nothing to do but watch my niece. Then like finding an onion ring at the bottom of the french fry container, I stumbled upon the USA v. Australia.
I watched intently, hoping to get a glimpse of the mighty US as they stomped the helpless and Bogut-less Aussies.
Team USA pulled out a 87-76 victory, making them a perfect 5-0 in their pre-Olympic tune up.
The score however did nothing to tell the actual story.
The Aussies play the same kind of style as a Greece, Spain or Argentina, teams the USA will have to beat to capture gold. The Aussies do not have the talent of the aforementioned teams, and they still gave the US a tough time.
The Aussies packed it in on the defensive side, forcing the US to pass it’s way out of trouble. The US had other plans it seemed, and instead of passing the ball settled for isolation plays and when it seemed they were passing it well, someone would take a wild shot and miss.
The Aussies kept the game within 6 with 2 minutes to go, and then Dwayne Wade decide enough was enough. Wade began to dribble in to the defense and make them commit to he and he only. It worked for Wade because of his uncanny ability to drive to the hoop. Chris Paul followed Wade’s lead and drove to the hoop, with the defense collapsing, Paul found a cutting Dwight Howard for the jam.
It took the US a while to figure out the Aussies, they wont have that kind of time against the more talented and experienced European and South American teams. Coach K needs to get his team to play like a team, plain and simple. We know how individually talented these guys are, and in 92 that’s all you needed, but it aint 92 anymore. The international level has changed so much, they have more intelligent defensive schemes and way more talent. It’s time for the US to adapt similar to the way the European’s have adapted their games to a style the dumfounds the US.
If the US hopes to win gold, the formula is simple: Pass+Defending+Patience+Respect=Dominance
One more note, Coach K took his first time out in 5 games in the second half. In 92 coach Chuck Daily took zero timeouts in the entire Olympics, simply amazing.

The Redeem Team

by rooster427 on June 24, 2008

Dr. Gonzo Reporting,

Once upon a time, the US Men’s Basketball team not winning gold was unheard of. A bronze? Ha, that would be like Tiger Woods not making the cut.

Sadly, that is the current state of US hoops, coming off a bronze medal at the 2004 Athens Olympics. Fear not loyal patriots, early signs point to great management commitment and returning players who seem hell bent on capturing gold and settling for nothing less.

The US Men’s Olympic team was announced on Monday, the roster a mouth watering buffet of athleticism and power.

This year’s squad is lead by veteran point Guard Jason Kidd, and includes the NBA’s two top point guards in Chris Paul and Deron Williams. Kidd is one of 5 holdovers from the 2004 squad, which included Carmelo Anthony, Lebron James, Carlos Boozer and Dwayne Wade. Kobe Bryant will be the second oldest player on the team, with his 30th birthday landing somewhere near the medal ceremonies. The squad also includes defensive stopper Tayshaun Prince, shooter Michael Redd, and big men Chris Bosh and Dwight Howard.

From what I can see this team has individual playmakers and game changers, how coach K blends all the styles will be key. We all saw how unselfish Williams and Paul can be, look to them to set the tempo and pace. They would be doing themselves a great injustice if they let Kobe and Lebron handle the ball, Paul and Williams need to feed them, without forgetting about feeding
big Dwight Howard in the middle.
The only thing other than the selfish nature some of these players often show is the lack of height. Bosh and Howard are pretty tall, but Bosh is soft. Those who watched the Jazz v. Lakers in the playoffs saw Boozer unable to create over the taller Gasol and Odom.
There are a lot of questions that will be answered in the coming months, but my expert opinion is that this is the closest we will get to the dream team. In fact call them the REDEEM TEAM, that’s right, you read that name here in the DCSPORTSPULSE Blog, tell your friends. In 2004 they were embarrassed in 2008 they Redeem themselves with Olympic gold.
The US begins tournament play in Group B on August 10, against China.
