Who’s Covering Who?

by Dr. Gonzo on September 18, 2008

Dr. Gonzo Reporting,

It used to be that you had to subscribe to some newspaper daily in order to know what was going on with your favorite team.  Those days have now been replaced with the YOUTUBE World Order.  Not only do we get to see all our favorite highlights with the touch of a button, now athletes themselves are in control of the media.  We’ve always embraced the way technology has enhanced the pleasure of watching sports, but could this new era of coverage from every angle be a recipe for disaster?

The Wackey World of Sports

by Dr. Gonzo on August 27, 2008

Dr. Gonzo Reporting,

The Olympic ceremonies are over, time to send your 14-year-old Chinese gymnasts back to the rice fields.  Oh bye the way, we won the most medals.  Take that communism.

Right now the sports world is in a state of anticipation.  We eagerly await the beginning of the NFL season, the College Football season and the MLB playoffs.  Every time we turn on ESPN or talk radio, every Joe Somebody thinks they know why certain teams will succeed or fail.  The funny thing is that most of these predictions will be horribly wrong.

I come to you as a savior. I wont bore you with that garbage, instead I’ve brought you four topics that seemed relevant to me.  So they damn well better be relevant to you.  Here goes….

Madden ‘09 To Be Released at Midnight Tonight

by Rooster on August 11, 2008

Yes the rumors are true. If you are one of the die hard gamers that pre-ordered your Madden ‘09 video game you will be able to pick it up tonight at midnight. Even if you haven’t pre-ordered the game you may still have a shot at grabbing a copy. I for one will probably just wait until Best Buy opens tommorow morning. There were plenty of copies to go around last year and I expect much of the same tommorow. If you are going to make the trek tonight to your local video game provider you can find a list of every GameStop store in every state that will be carrying the game at midnight HERE.

Learning the Ropes

by Rooster on August 8, 2008

So the past two days I have really been herbin’ it up.  I have spent all but about 6 hours, for meals and sleep, on the computer.  I decided to change our blog from Blogger to Wordpress which explains the new site layout (the layout may change a few more times until I feel it is perfect for our needs).  What a freakin’ experience sports fans.  For those of you who do not blog or operate any kind of website you probably have no clue what I am talking about.  Let me explain.  I chose to move the blog to Wordpress to allow for more control over The DC Sports Pulse.  Now there are two ways to do this.  You can either host your blog on wordpress.com or download wordpress software from wordpress.org and host your domain with another service.  Most people will tell you that if you have limited knowledge about website development (that would be me) you should stick to wordpress.com.  Then again, most people also said Darrel Green was too small to play cornerback in the NFL, and Art Monk was too slow to play receiver, and now they are Hall of Famers.  So obviously I had to download the Wordpress software and manage the site myself.  If you want to be the best you have to be willing to put in the work my friends.

ESPN 980 Announces Gameday Lineup

by Dr. Gonzo on August 1, 2008

Dr. Gonzo Reporting,
ESPN-980AM, WTNT-570AM, WWRC-1260AM, WXTR 730 AM, WWXT 92.7 FM, and WWXX 94.3 FM, will all carry pre-game and post game coverage of all Redskins games this season.
The pre-game show will be hosted by Kevin Sheehan, but is expected to feature the entire on-air staff, including Brian Mitchell, Steve Czaban, Doc Walker, Al Koken and John Thompson. The games will still be called by Larry Micheals, Sonny Jurgensen and Sam Huff, but Doc Walker has been added as a sideline reporter.
As for the post game show, it appears Steve Czaban has finally got his wish. Andy Polin will host the post game show, and will do it live from Fed-Ex for all Skins home games, and in the studio for all road games. Over the years on the “Sports Reporters,” Czabe has always criticized Andy for not attending any Skins home games. Joining Polin for the post game show is John Riggins, that’s right he’s back.
The new ESPN 980 will also feature a Monday Morning Quarterback show with hosts Kevin Sheehan and Andy Polin and special analyist John Riggins.
If this seems like a lot of information for the readers, it’s really not. Basically ESPN 980 added a pre-game show, with a format similar to those of ESPN TV and FOX. A bunch of guys will tell us stuff about the game, that in retrospect will be totally wrong or occasionally right.

ESPN 980 HAS BEGUN

by Dr. Gonzo on July 21, 2008

Dr. Gonzo Reporting,

It’s offically, offical.

As first reported by DCRTV.COM, and then later comfirmed by the DCSPORTSPULSE.COM’s very own Dr. Gonzo, today marked the beginning of the 980 Dan Snyder era.

Last night at midnight, the programming offically switched from regular old Sports Talk 980 to the “brand new” ESPN 980. This came as no surprise to those who have followed this story all along, we knew that Snyder took control of WTEM on July, 1, 2008, but it was always a question of when the programming would change.

One good thing that came out of this is that you can now hear 980 on more frequencies than before, the station is now carried on 92.7 FM, 94.3 FM, and 730 AM.

The new lineup for 980 is as follows: first we say goodbye to the First Team with Steve Czaban, and hello to Sportscenter AM, from 5-6 AM, follwed by Mike and Mike. From 10-12 we have “The Herd” with Colin Cowherd, occupying Doc Walker and Dan Patricks old spots. Doc Walker will remain on 980, and move to 12-2 with Kevin Sheehan. The John Thompson show has been trimmed by an hour, and will air from 2-4. The Thompson show line-up remains unharmed. Sticking with success, the Sports Reporters remain in the 4-7 slot, but rumors have the reporters linked to a possible addition of John Riggins, who at the moment is showless.

I can not tell a lie, I knew this change was coming today, but I was awoken early by a text message that read, “What are Mike and Mike, doing on 980?” Funny how many people still appear to be out of the loop.

Now reality sets in, and all the questions will begin to be answered. Some thought they would never hear Brian Mitchell and Steve Czaban working for Snyder, but they are still on board. Lets hope they don’t have their passion and fire censored from above.

Jerry Coleman Anecdote

by Rooster on July 17, 2008

Dan Steiberg had an interesting post on the DC Sports Bog yesterday that included an interview with Jerry Coleman, former WTEM beat reporter. The interview talked about his personal experiences at the station, what direction he thinks the station is going now that Snyder owns it, and what his plans were now that he had been let go by WTEM.

From what I have heard Mr. Coleman was somewhat of a polarizing figure at Sports Talk 980. For example here are two excerpts from the comments section of the DC Sports Bog, the first quite disparaging and the second just the opposite:

You may have found Coleman to be such a great guy, but I too worked with him years ago and I and many of his co-workers found him to be an annoying, droopy eyed, mumble mouthed jerk-off. I nearly put him through the studio window one night that we unfortunatly had to work together because he pissed me off so badly. I will remain nameless just because I feel like it and because he doesn’t deserve the satisfaction that I like many others that have worked with him hate his fake ass. Good riddance to him. Hopefully we will never have to hear him EVER again in either the DC or Balmer markets!!

I thought Jerry was quite fair to the Redskins and was the work-horse of 980. I had plenty of respect for him…but it was quite unfortunate that people like Czaban, Linn and Doc showed little to no respect or professional courtesy. Jerry was the ultimate pro and that always showed on the radio. I hope he gets a network job and blows away his old 980 friends.

I often heard stories of B-Mitch hiding Jerry’s cell phone and rearranging his desk, you know little office pranks, nothing malicious. The photo from the D.C Sports Bog post is priceless by the way. However while Coleman may have been the brunt of a few jokes I got the feeling that most people respected his work and if not genuinely liked he was at least tolerated. While I did not know Mr. Coleman very well I did have a few run ins with him and from what I can tell he is a solid guy. The following is a funny anecdote between him and Czaban.

Around a month ago I had the pleasure of sitting in on The Sports Reporters with producer Steve Solomon (one of the best in the biz and the nicest guy you will ever meet). I think this was the day after Josh Howard of the Dallas Mavericks had the lapse in judgment while commenting on marijuana in the NBA. He talked about how smoking pot wasn’t that big a deal and how many NBA players hit the bong during the offseason. This story happened to be one of the main topics on The Sports Reporters that day. Within a couple of minutes the show became a debate as to whether or not pot should be illegal, if it was right or wrong, and on the perception of the drug today, thus opening Pandora’s box. Needless to say the phones started lighting up. The show got a couple of callers basically saying pot is the devil and a couple saying that pot should be legal. They also got an ex judge or ex cop, at least he said he was, that believed pot should be legal, which was intersting. Anyways, at the next break Jerry Coleman entered the studio to get ready for his 20/20 sports update. For those of you who do not listen to The Sports Reporters that often you may not be aware that Steve Czaban is fairly conservative. Whenever the topic of drugs is introduced he usually will use the conversation as a forum to push his own opinions. And from what I can tell Jerry Coleman seems to be a bit of a softball, a liberal if you will. So Coleman does his update and then I presume Coleman and Czabe got into a heated argument (I was talking to Solly at the time and was behind soundproof glass) because the next thing you know Coleman’s Gatorade bottle and salad went flying out of the studio. “Did you see that” Coleman asked us as he ran into the production booth. “He [Czabe] just threw my dinner out the studio door!” I have to admit the whole fiasco was pretty hilarious. Czaban throwing Colemans food out of the studio was classic and Jerry threatening to leave without doing the next 20/20 update was even better.

I have to give the guy credit for going toe to toe with “The Great Czambino” like he did. Czabe is pretty much the face of Sports Talk radio in D.C. and I think it took a lot of guts to stand up to him. As for the final sports update? Cooler heads eventually prevailed and Jerry finished his 20/20 segment. These guys are professionals for a reason and I knew they would not let their argument affect their craft which was great to see. In his interview with Dan Steinberg, Mr. Coleman was quoted as saying “I was able to contribute an opinion or three when I joined 980’s talk shows. I never ran from expressing myself…” Love him or hate him the guy stood by his opinions and didn’t back down from a fight. So Mr. Coleman I wish you the best of luck in your future endeavors and hope you can find another niche in Sports Talk Radio.

The Washington Post has a great article on some of the major changes that will be coming to Sports Talk 980 which can be found here.

Dr.Gonzo Reporting,
Peter Nowak has annouced his squad for the rapidly approaching 2008 Bejing Summer Olympics. This years team is composed of 18 players including 12 with prior National Team Experience.
Jozy Altidore, Feddy Adu, Benny Feilhaber, Maurice Edu, Brad Guzan and Micheal Bradley comprise the younger batch of US stars. While the surprise addition of the veteran Brian McBride adds leadership and skill up front.

Relief for the Dog Days

by Dr. Gonzo on July 17, 2008

Dr. Gonzo Reporting,

What’s a sports fan to do?

We have officially entered what sports pundits call the “Dog Days of Summer.”
The proof is in the pudding, as last night featured no games by any of the major sports, except for summer league Wiz. You couldn’t even get soccer that mattered.

On top of the absence of the games that count, Sportscenter lead with speculation and hearsay on the red carpet. Like a deer in the headlights, ESPN asked Aaron Rodgers the tough question, what about Favre?

It was like watching that kid in class who was a terrible public speaker, but he had to do his speech anyway, and all you could do was cringe.

Yesterday was the equivalent of a black out in the sports world, nothing, just waiting and hoping the lights will come back on. While you wait, here are a few things you can watch to pass the time:

1.) VH1 Rock Honors: The Who: Tonight at 9, VH1 honors legends The Who. You’ll see vintage “Who” footage, plus rockers from today and yesteryear honoring The Who.

What to Watch for: Pearl Jam, Jack Black and Incubus playing covers of Who songs.

2.) 12 AM Sneak Preview of “Batman: The Dark Knight”: I shouldn’t even have to explain this one, if you saw Batman Begins, then you’ve been anticipating this for what seems like forever. Tickets should still be available to watch the 12 am show, so check out fandango.

What to watch for: This is Heath Ledgers last flick, and some are saying possibly his greatest role as “The Joker.”
P.S.: If you can’t get in to the 12 am, some theaters around the area have prepared a 3am and 6am showing.

3.) MLS Thursday Night Soccer: Quit snickering. Right now this is the only sport in
America that is actually playing games that matter.

What to watch for: 8pm on ESPN Kansas City hosts the Columbus Crew. The Crew has had a surprisingly productive year, watch for former Terp Robbie Rodgers, part of the MLS 2008 All-star squad, to push the Crew over-the-top.

There it is, the cupboard is as bare as it gets. We now have to ban together and suck it up, time to talked to love ones, read books, mow the lawn, paint our rooms and do all the things that are strangled by sports’ powerful grip. Summer will be over before we know it, so fear not valiant couch potatoes the light will return soon.
